I use to read a lot more books than I do today, back when I was still in school and before I owned a laptop. Books are overpriced in Santiago – they’re at least double the retail price in North America. And public libraries, well, not so common here. Book swaps and borrowing from friends is my source of tangible reads these days. I love picking up a book to spend a few minutes/hours living in another reality, if only for a while. If you have any interesting titles to share, please let me know. Here are a few good reads I’ve enjoyed recently:
Currently reading …
- Casa de los Espíritus (novel) by Isabel Allende Popular Chilean author who is known for writing novels based on the history of Chile.
- American Popular Music: Minstrelsy to MP3 (non-fiction) by Larry Starr The history of rock and pop music. What not to love?
- Las Brujas (novel) by Ronald Dahl Spanish version of a children’s favourite, “The Witches.”
Recently read …
- Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (novel) by Helen Fielding Needed some humour added into my life – and got it! Bridget to the rescue!! [3.2011]
- A Passage to India (novel) by E. M. Forster The classist issues between expats and local residents experienced by the characters in this novel were, I found interestingly, echoed in today’s society in Santiago, though in a modern and diluted manner. [2.2011]
- Water for Elephants (novel) by Sara Gruen Some action, circus politics, wild animals, fights, and of course, romance. An easy read with a bit of everything on its circus train. But … can anyone tell me if the murderer was actually the elephant or the girl? [10.2010]
